Every year, a group of students goes down to Alys Beach, Florida to create work for the annual Digital Graffiti Festival. This is work that was on display in a non-competition category in 2018 and 2019.

In 2019, I acted as Co-Lead on the buttery projections, collecting all of the artist content, compiling it, and mapping it to the buttery at the entrance of the beach. These buildings were the first thing guest saw as they attended the festival and was the sign that they had arrived.

Leaping off the Screen

The biggest focus with this project is it’s use of a unique aspect ratio found on the building (the buttery). Inspired by Bermudian architecture, the butteries demanded the use of novel approaches to the work. Over the past two years, I personally have created 5 unique pieces of content for the butteries, all of which can be seen below.

Donkey Kong Classic

This piece was inspired by the 1983 classic arcade game, Donkey Kong. The Buttery allowed for the scaffolding that Mario “Jumpman” Mario walks across to seem more lifelike in the environment. The upper portion is completely made of pixel art created in Adobe Illustrator to resemble the graphics of the original game.

The bottom portion of the piece uses 3D recreations of the barrels seen in the original game. I textured the barrels to stay within the same core style that brings back the nostalgia of Donkey Kong.

Sunglasses Through Kaleidoscope

This piece uses live action elements of a musical performance but through the lens of a Kaleidoscope. The footage was time-remapped using Adobe After Effects to give the stutter-look as more of an experimental method.

I’m Blue Daba Dee Daba Die

This piece uses abstract visuals with an overall blue color scheme. For this piece, my goal was to explore the use of Trapcode Particular created by RedGiant. I created several generators and duplicated to give it the layered look you see.

The depth seen on the building makes the buttery seem more like a portal to another world rather than dimensional images on a flat surface.

Chaos I

This work pushed filters in After Effects to their limits, applying more and more filters on-top of one-another to give the piece an unmistakable look. The base footage was from an older failed project pitch I created. I took the elements from this early project and applied several RedGiant Magic Bullet Looks filters.

After getting the footage to look a certain way, I then converted it to look as if it was on an LED television using CC Ball filter. This gives it this chaotic nature which worked perfectly at such a large scale.
